How to Learn Machine Learning from Scratch

Machine learning can look intimidating from the outside — lots of maths, unfamiliar terms and endless libraries. The good news is that you can learn it step by step, even if you are starting from zero. This roadmap shows what to learn, in what order, and how to practise so the knowledge sticks.

Step 1: Learn Python Basics

Python is the most widely used language for machine learning. Start with variables, data types, loops, conditions, functions and lists/dictionaries. You do not need to master everything — aim to be comfortable writing short programs and reading other people’s code.

Step 2: Learn to Work with Data

Machine learning is mostly about data. Learn NumPy for numerical arrays and Pandas for tables of data: loading CSV files, filtering rows, handling missing values and grouping. Add Matplotlib or Seaborn to visualise what you find.

Step 3: Build Your Maths Foundation

You need intuition more than advanced proofs. Focus on:

  • Statistics: mean, median, variance, distributions and correlation.
  • Probability: basic rules and conditional probability.
  • Linear algebra: vectors, matrices and what a dot product means.
  • Calculus (intuition): what a gradient is and why models “descend” to reduce error.

Step 4: Learn Core Machine Learning Concepts

  • Supervised learning: learning from labelled examples — regression (predicting numbers) and classification (predicting categories).
  • Unsupervised learning: finding structure without labels, such as clustering customers.
  • Training and test data: why you evaluate on data the model has not seen.
  • Overfitting and underfitting: models that memorise versus models that are too simple.
  • Evaluation metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, RMSE and when to use each.

Step 5: Practise with scikit-learn

scikit-learn lets you train models such as linear regression, decision trees, random forests and k-means with just a few lines of code. Practise the full workflow: clean data, split it, train a model, evaluate it, and try to improve it with better features.

Step 6: Build Projects

Projects are where learning becomes skill. Good beginner projects include:

  • House or car price prediction
  • Customer churn prediction
  • Customer segmentation with clustering
  • Spam or sentiment classification of text

Use public datasets, write up what you did and why, and publish your code on GitHub.

Step 7: Move Towards Deep Learning and Generative AI

Once the fundamentals feel comfortable, explore neural networks with TensorFlow or PyTorch, then language models, generative AI and RAG applications.

Tips to Stay on Track

  • Practise a little every day rather than a lot once a week.
  • Learn concepts by applying them to a dataset immediately.
  • Do not get stuck on one topic — move forward and revisit it later.
  • Explain what you learned in your own words; it reveals gaps quickly.
  • Learning with a mentor or structured course helps you avoid common detours.

Conclusion

Learning machine learning from scratch is very achievable: Python first, then data handling, the essential maths, core ML concepts, scikit-learn practice and real projects. Follow the steps in order and you will build both understanding and a portfolio along the way. If you are still deciding between fields, our comparison of Data Science vs Data Analytics may help.
